The fact that in most parts of the story the relator uses “we” to “indicate the town’s collective female element”(Burduck, par.6), and then drastically changes it to “they”, is another argument of Burduck to reinforce his perspective on the narrator being a woman. The concluding part of the story in “A Rose for Emily” goes from “[…] we knew that there was one room […] which no one had seen in forty years, and which would have to be forced” to “ They waited until Miss Emily was decently in the ground before they opened it” (Faulker).
