Gender Stratification
Its tradition, it’s because that is the way it has always been, men are stronger than women. This is what I have heard since I was a little girl. Cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the kids this is all women’s work and taking out the garbage, bringing home the paycheck, mowing the lawn that it is men’s work. Not any more, things have changed over time, men and women share work equally now, right? No, this is not the case and it is called gender stratification. “Gender stratification is males and females unequal access to property, power, and prestige” (Henslin, 2014). This should not be an issue in today’s society; you should not have better opportunities in life or society because of your gender.
You should be equal in society no matter what your gender or sex. “Sex refers to male or female, and gender refers to masculinity or femininity” (Henslin, 2014). Gender roles have changed over the decades but there is still inequality between males and females even in today’s society. When I was a baby, my dad did not change one of my diapers. My husband on the other hand changed just as many diapers as I did when our children were babies. In the 1970’s father’s worked and mother’s stayed home with the children. In the 2000’s, men take care of their children with the women because in a lot of families both parents work. They both work because they need two incomes to survive. So my hope is that my children with think that it is the norm to help their wives take care of their children equally.
