I've posted your earned mid-term grades in English 111 on Banner and will be glad to discuss your situation with you individually sometime next week, if you'd like. These are information grades. As usual, knowledge is power: What the grade tells you gives you a chance to be pro-active in ways that might ensure your success in the course. A proper response to a mid-term grade is neither resignation nor smugness. Without my forcing the issue, the overall average at mid-term in my two sections of English 111 happens to be exactly 2.0 or "C," a reasonable outcome for a first-semester college course, one that includes several failures by students who simply quit coming to class and submitting the assigned writing projects.…

Grade Inflation Is grade inflation fair? Depends on who you might ask. When people think about grade inflation do they think about those classes, where thanks to a curve, they were able to go from a failing D to a passing C. Then there are others who think about their friend that never went to class, barely studied, and turned in assignments late who their grade got inflated to pass with a C thanks to a curve. There are two types of people, those who work hard and those who do not.…

Does Standardized Testing Accurately Test Intelligence? Standardized tests, such as the ACT or the American College Test, have been around for quite sometime; however, its importance is often questioned. In the last decade, more than half of U.S. colleges required ACT scores for prospective students to even have their applications reviewed (“How Many Colleges Are There In America” 1). Standardized testing may appear to benefit students, but it also promotes nothing but hardships to some people.…

Think about a time when you were taking a high school class. Was it easier to work on papers and take multiple tests throughout the year, or, to take a major test that applies for more than all of your average grades combined? A test that covers everything over a 36 week period is obviously going to be harder and more stressful than a test that covers curriculum that a student has just retained. Should we really be putting this kind of pressure on high school students? Myself, having already taken 3 of the 5 necessary STAAR tests in order to graduate high school, believe that too much of a student's career rides on a single standardized test.…

In the article “ The Tide is Turning: High School is Coming Back” by the author Ann P. Cronin, and published by the Harvard School of Education on February 9, 2016 we were informed about the possibility of many top colleges and universities implementing new admission processes, in which factors such as the SAT, AP Courses, extracurricular activities and community service would be deemphasized. According to the author these changes would take place as the result of students going through increased amounts of depression, anxiety and sometimes even drugs abuse as a result of the enormous pressure that it implies to build a “Strong” resume that will get them into a good college. The change also comes as a result of the actual idea of these courses…
