Due to gender codes that are enforced by the media and the society, specific gender expectations are formed. Male individuals are portrayed as being masculine while females are portrayed as soft and feminine. If an individual fails to meet their gender expectations, we label them as not being a ‘real’ man or women. As a strong female, I can say that every time I have done something that goes against the female gender roles. Other people have said things like “you are a girl so act like one” but how is a women supposed to act? These traits and postures that are considered feminine are not biological but rather set by our society. These gender codes do not just portray how women and men should present themselves to the world but also, what they should and should not do. I have been in situations working with men, that require lifting up boxes and moving heavy objects around. The male individuals would immediately come froward to help me but when they see another men lifting up something heavy, they do not help. This just shows that based on what they have seen and understood growing up, they presume women to be weak. In conclusion, yes these gender codes have great effect on how I see and interact with people and how they interact with
