What I mean by this is that girls are not allowed to wear any tank top that doesn't have a three finger width. If it's 90° and sunny not everyone is going to want to wear regular t shirts and pants, when it's that hot your going to want to wear less clothing. It is so unfair that the staff and teachers would think that a girl's shoulders can be distracting or

Deborah L. Rhode author of “Why Looks Are the Last Bastion of Discrimination” discusses the idea of how looks have been a large contributor to society since the beginning of human kind. In her article, Rhode states, “Although the government is no longer in the business of enforcing such discrimination, it still allows businesses, schools, and other organizations to indulge their own prejudices.” (Rhode 244) With her saying this it could not be any truer because it still applies to Cedartown High School. At Cedartown High School, some subjects cover the idea of discrimination that Rhodes describes.…

In “White Tops, Grey Bottoms”, Akerman described why schools have a strict dress code which students must follow and cannot break. The writer mentioned the dress code should be accepted with not only white and grey for tops and bottoms but also a variety of colors and design (330-332). This reading reminded me of my own experience with a strict dress code. When I was a high school student, my school also had a strict dress code. For example, all students must have measured the size of their bodies in the school in order not to let students change the school uniforms such as a star mark and kind of a hard plank inside the girl’s skirts, which means teachers can find whether or not the girl students change their skirts.…

Making “thumb width” tank-tops mandatory in order to maintain the focus of the male students and faculty is outrageous. Shaming female students for allowing their shoulders or bra straps to show is ridiculous. When did a girl’s shoulder become distracting for boys? On a hot day, I will gladly throw on a tank-top, but I think twice about it because I know the school staff will make me change due…

Clovis Unified School District recently adopted a gender-neutral dress code that has one policy for both boys and girls. It enables boys to wear earrings and keep their hair long and removes any language that specifically points out that certain genders are banned from wearing certain clothes. For example, instead of saying girls must wear shorts that are no shorter than three inches above the knee, it will say a student must not wear shorts any shorter than three inches. While this is a good step forward, they only adopted the policy after first voting against it. The Fresno Bee wrote an article on the protests that led to a revote and described how students at Buchanan High School swapped gender specific outfits, meaning girls wore boys shirts and boys wore girls clothes like dresses and tights.…

Overall, the school dress code is biased towards females, it sexualizes the female body and humiliates the female students. The rules harass females, blaming them for showing skin, distracting male students with their bodies, and taking away any rights they have by directing the rules at them. Females should no longer be treated this way, and the school dress code needs to stop being sexist, discriminating and directed at females when they do nothing…

There are many students who are now fed up with being dress-coded. If you were to ask about twenty girls both online and in different schools, they’d probably tell you that they are tired of being dress-coded while boys aren’t. Schools not realizing the sexism that plays a huge role in dress coding girls. It’s weird how schools don’t seem to notice that they aren’t cracking down on boys nearly as much as they do with girls. Boys could go around with their pants hanging off their waist, showing their underwear and only get an occasional “pull up your pants” but if a girl walked into school with her shoulder showing a part of their bra showing, they’ll get sent to the office.…
