Women play an interesting role when it comes to how they are exemplified in Hollywood. The Cosmopolitan magazine is a big example of this. Each month, women are dolled up, stripped down, and somehow, still edited to fit the cover of this magazine. Cosmopolitan brings up topics only appealing to a very select type of reader, and reinforces those topics with the use of sexualized imagery of what the “everyday” woman should look like.…

Often times, people perceive women as weak - it's seen in the fairytales with the dainty damsel in distress, waiting for a man to save her, as seen even in modern takes of stories like Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. This sort of submissive take on females has been told over and over since the beginning of our history when men hunted and left women to give birth and gather fruits. The weakness of women has been woven into story after story, until we believe it to be a universal truth and allow men to take dominant roles in society. After all, men like Prince Charming are perceived to be stronger for a reason - men generally have more of the hormone testosterone, which increases muscle mass and makes them look stronger. Women tend to develop more estrogen than testosterone, and naturally less muscle mass than men while being more emotionally vulnerable due to menstrual periods (they are also more prone to depression than males).…

Contrary to past traditions, the upbringing of males with feminine traits has developed into a rising custom. Similar to feminist’s movement toward independence from men, parents now want to raise their sons free from dependency on women. However, instilling feminine behaviorisms in sons goes against society’s norm. As Gloria Steinem correctly identifies, parents must have courage in order to raise a son with feminine characteristics, as a result of society’s stereotypes and set gender views. The idea of males displaying feminine traits challenges society’s idea of a “manly man”.…

In the late 1970s, there is a Maybelline commercial that does change how women are viewed as society. Rather than her sitting at a dressing table or wearing a long gown, the women are seen doing things such as getting off a plane. They are more active in the world. The line from this “eyes as unique as your signature”, can kind of go both ways. It is saying that your make-up is unique and shows your personality rather than create one for you, but it also says that make-up is what creates that unique quality.…

Looking back at my childhood now, I realized that my parents taught me quite a bit about how males and females should look and behave. Whenever I would go to a park with my sisters, my mother would always tell us to not play like the boys since they played “not nicely.” According to my mother, girls know how to play nicely and share, not boys. Whenever I would play in my soccer games, both my mother and father would tell me to be careful around the male players since they were stronger and bigger than me. According to my mother, girls were the ones who showed their emotions and not boys.…
