Gender Stereotypes In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

In “Of Mice and Men” the bosses son Curley is married to a women referred to as Curley's wife throughout the entire book. Out of everybody on the ranch, she is the only girl, and this fact rips her apart throughout the novel. In my collage there is a picture of a girl sitting by a tree crying and depressed (Alone Sad Girls. 22 August 2012 ). I relate this girl to Curley's wife, because Curley's wife is depressed and just needs someone to talk to or she'll go crazy. She is a beautiful person, but sadly uses it to try and persuade the ranchers to do bad things with her. The guys on the ranch can see how she flirts with almost all of them, causing them to have a dislike to her. The reason behind this is they know that if Curley found out that that were even talking to her he would get them all fired. She isn't able to do what she wants and enjoy her life, because of limits put on her for being a woman. The average women in this time is supposed to make dinner and set the table, while Curley goes out and works everyday. Some girls might enjoy this , but the reality is that she doesn't. Like most girls she wants to go out and do something with her life, who knows maybe be in the movies. None of the guys think that she could be useful on the ranch, and only think she jeopardizes they're job. The lifestyle that she has to live is completely different then the ones that girls across America live now. By being stereotyped she is not respected or looked at as a contribution to any of the work forces. For her not being respected this makes her angry, and leads her to disrespect them.
