The film takes place in Paris, France in the 1930's and follows the story of an orphaned boy names Hugo. Hugo befriends a young girl, Isabelle, and a shopkeeper, Melies, while trying to unravel a secret he believes his late father left behind. Before viewing the film I had no preconceived notions about the film in regards to sexism. After watching the film I did not find it to be incredibly sexist. I did find that it filled several gender stereotypes, but I feel that it is due in part to the fact that this was a time period …show more content…
Through all of the media they consume and what they observe just watching those around them it is important that we take an active role in teaching them about sexism and gender stereotypes. These stereotypes are slowly being broken down as Diekman and Murnen showed in their article. There is still a lot of work to be done and a long way to go on the road to equality. But, by educating younger generations we can help to create a world with a better understanding of each other and fair expectations of one another. It is important that when watching films like Hugo it be explained that things were different then than they are now and when reading with children we discuss the content of the books. With each passing year as new media for children is created we are slowly teaching younger generations new gender
