Advertisements are a form of art that casts a shade of light on products. In order stand out, companies attract consumers by forming generalizations, ex Beauty products or certain beverages…Products like these influence the minds of culture and define what is the social norm for behavior. These products listed are wrongdoers of the advertising system by forcing gender roles and asserting claims that are false but purporting them as truth.
In the Dr.Pepper 10 commercial , a Brawny, tough as nails man, is in the woods, completing strenuous activities such as cutting down trees, and capturing fish with his hands.Once finishes picking up “trees”, he picks up a can and claims “just for men”. Another commercial from Dr. Pepper 10 is one in which a male that is in an action movie is completing the impossible and riding down a cliff at the end of the commercial it claims that the drink is not for women. In both ads women are looked down upon and don’t have the masculinity to drink the can. I feel we as a society are so advanced that assigning gender to drinks is childish and definitely offensive to women everywhere.

A good example on how on how advertisers use gender portrayals is that the male in a soap opera which makes an appearance in daytime television is caring and is not able to show his masculine side due to a women’s view of a men’s masculine side. Advertisers use portrayals of different men and women images to explore their motivations on what kind of commercials they would sit down for, and pay attention to. Craig supports his thesis by providing…

According to Jane Marcellus, “Unoriginal ideas multiplied without thought, stereotypes limit our ability to see people, things, and ideas in nuanced ways” (“Stereotypes in Advertising” 125). For decades, America has been known as the land of opportunity, and now, more than ever, Americans live by the motto that stereotypes are meant to be broken: Women are CEOs of some of the most influential and successful companies in the world, 50-year-olds are giving birth to their first child, a black man just successfully lead our country as President of the United States for two consecutive terms, the list goes on. One place that stereotypes do not seem to have disappeared are advertisements. Advertisers utilize stereotypes because they are, “the fastest…

In an essay that I read titled the “ Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt” by Jean Kilbourne, she also expresses herself in her essay on how women are being treated in advertisements. However, she also specifies how ads can be misinterpreted by viewers, in this case women. In her essay she talks about a similar advertisement to the Axe shower Gel. The advertisement she informs about is the Old Spice deodorant ad. In this advertisement there is a man who is on top of a woman, the advertisement has the word “NO” in big bold font.…

The company's CEO Fokke de Jong said, “If you want to read any form of sexism in here then it has to be towards the men. They obviously do not have the upper hand here.” This statement is not true based on how the woman are portrayed and how the men are seen taken advantage of them. Advertisements as a Genre Commercial advertisement is a genre directed to all people. Although all commercials fall under the same genre, there are many different techniques the author can take, depending on the purpose of the commercial and the audience that the author wants to reach. For example, an advertiser can take the celebrity approach and have a celebrity appearance in the commercial. This shows the audience that if the company is able to have someone famous represent them, they must be legitimate. Also, it allows people to think they can have the perfect life, just like their favorite role model.…

Advertising has a significant impact on society, by shaping gender roles, appearance standards, stereotypes, and sexual norms for both women and men, ultimately helping to mold the culture of the time.
