Gender Stereotypes In Dave Barry's Turkey In The Kitchen

Improved Essays
When it comes to who is in charge in the house, most people would say the male, but the truth is the female is in charge. The selection of “Turkey in the Kitchen” shows this very well. In Dave Barry’s “Turkeys in the Kitchen,” he uses humor to examine gender stereotypes. Berry is flat out saying that males are useless in the kitchen. In the selection he says that his wife ask him to watch the kids and he just turns a football game on. Today this is a normal thing for males to do. In the selection Berry explains how his wife asked him to help with something in the kitchen and he ended up getting the wrong type of food. Men are better at grilling outside. This could be because being outside doing something that a lot of females …show more content…
What they do not realize is that the women really appreciate them helping out every now and then. Males tend to think that females can not do the harder things so they need to just do those things. Well the truth is women may not be as strong as men but women can do just as much as men can do.
Many people seem to think that there is gender equality. Well there's not. Most men in today's society are not even trying to learn the ways of the women, and believe there are so many things women can not and should not do.
Berry says “I think most males rarely prepare meals for others, but when they do, they have their specialty dish…..let me say this men, women do not make it easy to learn (Berry 73).” This is very true. When men try to help and try to learn, the women tends to get very aggravated and tell them to just leave. This is quite sexist though because in school women were required to take home economics. According to Berry “...Most men make them as useful around the kitchen as ill-trained Labrador Retriever (Berry 72).” This can not be more true because as stated before, all most guys would rather sit there at watch football rather than help in the kitchen. Berry just comes out and says that men are useless in the kitchen. Berry also makes the statement “You cannot watch small children and the Detroit Lions at the same time, lets face it, the Detroit Lions are way more interesting (Berry

Some of the questions include: which ones are the turnips? Do you have to wash them first? Do you have to peel them? If you peel them why did you have to wash them? What do you peel them with? Do you cut them into strips, cubes, or little round pieces? Do you use the same thing you peeled them with? (Berry 74) This may be one of the main reasons the woman does not want the guy to help her, because she does not want to have to answer all the questions and show him what to do. At that point she might as well do all the work herself so she just does not ask for help in the

Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. “While the standard polarization of human being in a crime story is normally dividing by the law abiding citizens from the criminal, the characters here are soon divided on the basis of sex differences.” (Alkalay) In Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles” Glaspell uses a murder investigation of a woman’s husband to demonstrate the different roles of men and women in the early 1900’s. Glaspell shows the reader, through small significant objects that the men think are inessential to illustrate the greater value women have other than merely taking care of a household. She illustrates through important evidence the importance of individuality, and freedom between men and women.…

In the story, “Cooking Lessons” by Rosario Castellanos, a Mexican poet and author, known for her articulate writings about gender oppression which influenced feminist theories, uses food images to reflect gender roles. Castellanos also uses an interior monologue to represent the fact that women have no voice and are expected to just do and know certain things as opposed to men, for example, cooking. Eloquently written, Castellanos illustrates the inner thoughts of an educated and independent woman who has to forget all she knows and enter a unknowing world where she must depend on a man and take on the traditional role of a woman; a housewife. The nameless narrator stands starring hopelessly into a kitchen not knowing what to do or where…

It all began when I was a little girl, my great grandmother and grandmother always told me, “that a great woman is always in the kitchen looking out for her husband and putting his needs before their own.” When I was younger I had no other choice in believing in this; especially since I always saw my mother, great grandmother, and all the other women in my family do this. It was a belief that we all grew up with; a belief that I began to accept, but also came to question. Growing up wasn’t easy, I grew up doing chores around my house. For instance, cleaning the toilets, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning the kitchen, helping my mom prepare dinner, and etc.…

Gender role influence us greatly whether we notice it or not they affect how we see the world. Gender roles in society have emerged over time and indicate how men and women should behave. Men have traditionally been associated with masculine roles such as strength, aggression, and dominance, while on the other hand women have traditionally been associated with feminine roles such as passivity, nurturing, and subordination (Weisband & Thomas, 2015). These gender roles create expectation of what each gender can and cannot do. For example, women are expected to look after their kids and husband by doing the shopping, cleaning and cooking, while men are expected to be the head of the house and provide for the family by working hard and earning money (Muñoz Boudet, Turk, & Petesch, , 2013).…
