Gender Stereotypes In Canada

Following the Second World War, 22% of jobs in Canada were occupied by women. While women were expected to stop working once the war was over and become a house wife, many did not. Although, women were paid significantly less than men for the same work and 90% of all managerial roles were held by men. However, in 1951, after women began protesting the wage inequalities, Ontario enacted a legislation that made employers give “equal pay for equal work”; soon after the other provinces did the same. The downside to this was that women rarely worked with men because of workplace stereotypes. Jobs that consisted of majority male workers got paid more that jobs that consisted of majority female workers.

During the war, employers began making accommodations for women such as offering part-time work to married women with children so they were able to be home when their children returned from school.
