Gender Stereotypes In America

Throughout the years young males have a difficulty of having a strong male figure in their life. Without the a strong male figure, young males have the inability for them to live up to their stereotypical standards. A father’s absence is a recurring problem throughout American history. Most fathers who had stepped away from their parental obligations was mainly concentrated in the inner cities in the US alone. A way to fix this problem is to stop promoting this in general. By not promoting this occurrence, males wouldn’t be able to think that leaving their child is an outlet from becoming a parent. Not having a father has been such a nonchalant topic due to the constant talks about this subject, this should be conveyed as a taboo rather than a typical thing that males could do to not be there for their child. In America, a father’s absence is rapidly increasing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are over 24 million children. Out of those 24 million children, 1 out of 3 would live without their father. Therefore elucidating the impression that many kids can’t really experience what it’s like to have a father in their life. Washington Times expresses; “In Baltimore, 38 percent of families have two parents, and in St. Louis the portion is 40 percent.” These statistics presents a small percentage in father figures who are willing to actually stay with their family. In the passage ‘Being a Man’ by Paul Theroux reads; “The whole idea of manhood in America is pitiful in my opinion.” This quote demonstrates that even Theroux, a man, is disappointed of what the males being committed to his families.
