This book was written in 1871, which is in the same century with “Heart of Darkness”. While “Heart of Darkness” gave an image of women worth nothing at all, “Alice Through The Looking Glass” give a different image of women. Not only it give an opposite image, it also inspire women at that time to rise up. Normally women would not do anything and just listen to what their husband says or some of them would have to do filthy jobs. In this story, Alice is a “7 years and 6 months” girl, she went through a mirror to get into the world of wonder using a mirror. The concept of this story is a chess game which reflects gender equality because it is based on 2 colors which mirror the 2 genders men and women. In this book, characters are chess pieces, Alice is the pawn but she has fought her way through 8 squares to be a queen. Even the author think that it is equal but men are still considered higher than women. It is called equal but women have to give up a number of their uniques, for example, they have to give up their eggs, they must stay away from feelings and relationships, they can’t be educated. Women are also used as an object for sex and they are also viewed as it also. “ “For instance,” she hoarsely whispered, “take the way they have one another here. Mad, I tell you, absolutely mad. Everybody belongs to everyone else-don’t they? don’t they?” she insisted, tugging at Lenina’s sleeve. Lenina nodded her averted head, let out the breath she had been holding and managed to draw another one, relatively untainted. “Well, here,” the other went on, “nobody’s supposed to belong to more than one person. And if you have people in the ordinary way, the others think you’re wicked and anti-social. They hate and despise you. Once a lot of women came and made a scene because their men came to see me. Well, why not? And then they rushed at me. No, it was too awful. I can’t tell you about it.”” This part in page 81 shows is when Linda talking about how she is defined her sexuality leading to the judgment of women. Reading through the book, a large number of similarity between Lenina and Linda, probably the only 2 female character in the book.
