How Genders are portrayed differently in the media
Genders are all portrayed very differently throughout media, men are portrayed as tough,hard and sweaty where as women are portrayed as soft, fragile and in some cases vulnerable. It is undebatable that media shapes our views on what it means to be male or female.
HOW GENDERS ARE PORTRAYED AS ROLE MODELS
We encounter many different male and female role models throughout a day of media consumption. The issue with how media is portraying different role models of both genders is that, they seem varied however are they really varied and do they represent enough range of different men/women? Yet media representations of women is still remaining worryingly constant. Is media reflecting that the status of women has not really changed or is the media reflecting that the male-dominated media does not want to accept that society has changed and that both genders are equal and need to be treated accordingly.
The general representations of women across media is generally: • beauty (always having to look dolled up and possibly never seen without make up). • size/physique very important and has big influence upon girls especially during their youth. • sexuality (having to be small in size/physique) • emotional dealings • relationships
Discussions based on women's representation in the media tend to revolve and focus on physical beauty. Excluding other values such as, the lack of powerful female role models, and how extremely artificial the nature of such portrayals is, which is nothing (unrealistic) in comparison to the reality that women are
