The two ads I chose were Live Irrésistible, a perfume by Givenchy, in Elle magazine and TH Bold, a cologne by Tommy Hilfiger, in Men’s Health magazine. Elle is a magazine for women between the ages 16-30, who have an interest in fashion and the latest trends. In contrast, Men’s Health magazine targets men between the ages 18-30, who have an interest in their health and sex lives. According to Susan Bordo in almost every advertisement we see “men act and women appear”, these two ads are no objection to that belief. Women and men have always been depicted differently throughout the years, it seems certain stereotypes of femininity and masculinity will always play an underlying role in why advertisements for gender-specific products are displayed and targeted towards viewers the way that they are. This is particularly true when looking at magazines. Society is constantly being reminded of the fact that the images shown to them in magazines are being altered and enhanced in order to highlight natural qualities of both the male and female genders. Women are made to look thinner in some areas while curvier in other areas, and men are made to look bulkier and more muscular in comparison to the women. But besides the obvious physical changes that magazine editors make to pictures in their…

Craig’s Essay Analysis In Men’s Men and Women’s Women by Steve Crag, he argues about the purpose of using gendered images and portrayals in advertising. Nowadays, advertising is an over $200 billion a year industry. Each day individuals are exposed to over 3000 ads; despite this, many people still tend to believe that advertising does not influence their daily lives, decisions, or opinions. Today, it is the societal and cultural norm to think that, “men have positive attitudes toward casual and recreational sex, whereas women value the emotional intimacy and commitment around a sexual relationship” (Dahl). This makes both men and women feel as if they must fall into these norms. Because of the idea that men are more likely to want a sexual relationship, women’s bodies are often exploited in advertisements to attract male customers. Many advertisements directed towards men include images of beautiful women wearing little to no clothing. This is common in advertisements for beer, men’s hygiene products, cologne, and clothing (O’barr).…
