“Play occupies a ‘central role’ in children’s lives and is a ‘key facilitator for learning and development (Smith, 2015). Commercials that air on common children’s television stations are usually geared toward one gender. You will see boys playing with certain toys such as race cars and dinosaurs, then you will see girls playing with toys such as dolls and cooking sets. The relationship that these advertisements have to children as they grow up can be impactful. When gendered commercials are watched by girls it creates a stigma of how they are supposed to act. According to NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children), “girls’ toys were associated with physical attractiveness, nurturing and domestic skill” although they found that “boys’ toys were rated as violent, competitive, exciting and somewhat dangerous.” (NAEYC, 2015). Cases like the one from NAEYC show that types of toys that children play with can affect the attributes they grow over time. Since the types of toys that were associated with girls were related to “nurturing and domestic skill” and not “competitive” or “exciting” it can teach girls that their roles in life are not the same as boys.
