Gender can be defined as a perceived or projected identity encompassing masculine or feminine traits. This differs from sexuality in that it is more related to characteristics and mannerisms that are portrayed. Gender roles in marriage and family can generally be seen in duties and responsibilities. As previously mentioned, women used to stay home and run the household while men were known to be the provider and protector. Those can be identified as gender roles. Today, we see more of a balance between these things. Is it the sole role of a woman to cook, clean, bear and raise children? No. Is it the sole role of a man to work and be the only provider? No. We are also seeing an increase in same sex marriages and couples that do not fit these categories. From a biblical perspective we know Adam was created first, with given work, and then later Eve was created. I think we see more instructive terms as far as roles within a marriage such as in Ephesians. The “head” of the house is identified by Paul as the husband. Wives should be submissive to their husbands so long as it does not disobey God’s way. 1 Corinthians 7-9 says “For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.” In marriage and family it is best to either define these up front or be flexible. Derek and Stacy have learned to be flexible. They share duties or cooking, taking care of kids, working, etc. When both parents work outside the home, as in their situation, they have learned how to adjust accordingly to what they are doing. Their balance is working out
