Binary gender roles, and their perceived differences, are very prevalent in most cinema, but perhaps none are so stark and telling as those in torture porn. In his article, “The Problem of Saw: ‘Torture Porn’ and the Conservatism of Contemporary Horror Films”, Christopher Sharrett describes the role of the predatory captor as it relates to gender.1 Males almost always occupy the role, playing the part of vigilante as a “cruel but necessary father” who believes it is his duty to teach his moralities to his victims (34). Lockwood also points out voyeurism as a key characteristic of male captors, drawing attention to the focus the films give to the captor spying on the intended victim before their capture in some torture porn films (43).2 When…
An analysis of educational leadership reveals one of the many challenges facing a principal is the development of the school’s value system. The rituals of the school often demonstrate to the students, staff and community what the school values as important. The principal is often the leader of these rituals and they reaffirm the values of the school through what they attend to (Deal & Peterson, 1994, p. 30). Thus, the principal becomes a symbol of what to value and believe in.…

In the short story "Hills Like White Elephants," the author tells the reader the topic of conflict on page 636 when the American man tells Jig that it's a simple operation and not really an operation at all. Jig wanting to keep the baby while the American man wants to get rid of the problem they have. If the conflict of roles were switched and Jig favored to have an abortion and the American man did not, I'd feel differently since I do believe that a man has a saying in the decision making progress, since he has contributed to half of the fetuses DNA. However, personally, I believe that the women should have the final say since her body will be going through tremendous changes of pregnancy. That being the case I do not believe that the women…

Everyone treated other’s contributions with respect and consideration of their ideas and views. Each discussion and activity opened my eyes to recognize meaningful things that society normally overlooked.…
Gender Roles in a Changing World From Shakespearean society to today, men have been treating women as lesser than themselves, forcing them to lower their potential in the process. Men have also felt the need to protect women, as they are portrayed as the weaker sex. However, in the play, Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare shows the reader that women, when they go against society’s standards can be accepted as strong, capable, and independent, despite opposition. Shakespeare incorporated Beatrice into his play as an example of how some woman could go against the standards of the time, yet still be accepted. In Act 2 scene 1 of Much Ado About Nothing Beatrice declares that she doesn’t wish to marry, which was contrary to the popular belief of…

Theatre is a place where many things are explored, questioned, and portrayed. There are many inner workings in theatre, such as a semi-set hierarchy that begins with the directors with their occasional God-complex attitudes and ends amongst the actors whom are a sometimes a small part of the population of theatre persons that are necessary for a show but are overall very important. There are others separations that can occur such as division between age groups and gender. Theatre strict in their gender roles with women always taking more feminine roles such as being actresses with feminine and some over-sexualized roles that portray some stereotypical mannerisms a woman would enact. Also, in not only acting but being a cast member women tend to stay toward more feminine tasks such as costume design, keeping other cast members on task, and keeping the stage clean.…
