_ In the book, Things Fall Apart gender plays a very important role. In Umofia, one of the nine villages, gender is the most important component in the lives of the people. Men are always superior to women in all aspects. Men are the ones that do all the hard work. Women are only allowed to have one husband, but men are allowed to have many wives. They're many other restrictions and roles based on gender in the village.
_One character in the book that is most concerned with gender is Okonkwo, the main character. Okonkwo is the most respected men in his village and in all the other villages he is the most feared. But it wasn't always like that, he had a rough life growing up. His father Unoka was the poorest and least successful men in the village. "Unoka, the grown-up, was a failure. He was poor and his wife and children had barely enough to eat."(Thing Fall Apart pg 5). All the bad fame of his father influenced Okonkwo and led him to be the most respected male in the nine villages. Okonkwo did not express his feelings and he always seemed to be a cruel men. He would always stick with the manliest way of doing things. He treated his wives as women were supposed to be treated and sometimes worse, he ruled his family with a very heavy hand. Women were supposed to be home and cook the food for their husband and children, to Okonkwo this was very important and his wives had to do what they where supposed to or else he would get mad and loose his cool. During the week of peace Okonkwo's first wife had gone to a friends house to do her hair and she was late to cook the afternoon meal for Okonkwo, he like always demonstrated his anger in the worst way possible by beating his wife and breaking the week of peace.
