10. I didn't think I could be strong
In The Walking Dead women fight and kill to survive and save the people they love. Their roles are no longer just to fight alongside men; they became powerful characters, not dependent on men. Carol is the most influential character in the show – a woman whose past experiences and losses have turned her into someone who is determined to survive no matter what it takes. This chapter will briefly follow Carol’s character development. Having lost her husband and child, she needed to grow and change as a person in order to survive. After first introducing Carol as a housewife, a motherly figure and an abuse survivor, throughout seasons her character breaks that gender pattern.
Carol Peletier is a main character and one of the survivors. During the outbreak, she evacuated to Atlanta with her husband Ed and daughter Sophia. In Season 1, Carol was a quiet and submissive housewife who struggled with an abusive husband, Ed. She was protective of her daughter Sophia, and after Ed’s death Carol began to live freely, without the constant fear of her husband. Sophia’s death changed the way she saw the world, and as a result she gained independence and stood up for herself. Even though she was falling apart, she survived it, while the loss made her tougher. She has developed from a weak woman, a victim of abuse, to a survivor and a warrior. Carol has lost people, suffered, and a warrior was born out of necessity to survive and save the people she cares about. It was not the apocalypse that made her strong; she built inner strength and showed herself that she is strong, and is able to be independent, as well as protect others while preserving her motherly
