In a committed relationship, it is ordinary for individuals to face different complications, which can interfere with their relationship. Individuals must overcome these complications or be prepared to face the negative outcomes. In Sinclair Ross’ “The Lamp at Noon” and in Vidyut Aklujkar “Behind the Headline” the protagonists Ellen and Lakshmi struggle in their search for fulfillment in their lives due to lack of communication between the two couples and their gender roles. This ultimately leads to undesirable consequences for their relationships.
Having a sense communication is important in any relationship. In Lamp at noon Paul and Ellen have great difficulties interacting with each other because most of their interactions consist of fighting. In Vidyut Aklujkar’s “Behind the Headlines” Lakshmi plays the role of a housewife. During the beginning of the day the narrator says, “Lakshmi had the whole day in front of her… Of course Hariharan had no objection to her” (142, Aklujkar). This shows that Lakshmi is always at home and bored, implying that Hariharan is always away from home, making money to take care of Lakshmi. Lakshmi tires of being the housewife and decides to volunteer.For example, the narrator states, “After his midday call she would go there after a 4 hour shift”{142,Aklujkar} This depicts Lakshmi starting to play against her gender roles, by going out on her own without Hariharan’s permission.Women like Lakshmi would take permission from their husband before doing something, for Lakshmi to do this on her own shows that she is getting tired of the same routine.Lakshmi’s role as a housewife causes her to feel a lack of fulfillment, to create a sense of fulfilment she tries to fight against gender
