In the 1920’s, society was on a low when it came to women being in the same league as men. Men back then thought highly of themselves so they weren’t ever faithful, but there were some men that thought only having one women in their life was enough. In the 1920’s many people fulfilled their desires, for example sexual desires. Back then, people wanted to get rich quick because having money meant having everything including power. Therefore ending in having to buy off people so that they could get away with things, which is in fact corruption, which occurred frequently during those times.In the 1920’s women’s influence and power was very low when it came to the equalities of men. Scott Fitzgerald, shows that women had to rely on men in order to get all their needs. Fitzgerald mentions, “I married him because I thought he was a gentlemen…I thought he know something about breeding, he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe”(34).
Fitzgerald wrote this about Myrtle because she married George just because she thought he was rich. The idea of money made Myrtle comfortable and made her feel like she could have everything, including power over men. However after years of marriage, Myrtle realizes that GEorge cannot provide her with expensive materials, which is why she then has an affair with Tom. Money is what led her to have an affair and to corruption as her relationship with her husband is destroyed. Fitzgerald, also mentions in the novel, “Here’s your money. Go and buy ten more dogs with it”(28). Tom says this statement to Myrtle. He basically just gives money to her to make her content with their relationship. The affair between Tom and Myrtle is basically based on money and the idea that Myrtle just needed to sleep with Tom in order to get everything she wanted, such as a dog. Myrtle wants more of the relationship, but Tom does not feel this way. Tom wants to have a side relationship with Myrtle but Myrtle want Tom to leave Daisy and marry her
