Women have forever been seen as the weaker sex. Throughout history men have held all the power, women were viewed as property of men and were supposed to be submissive to men. Even in today’s society, where women have more slightly power, this everlasting sexism can see be found through the gender wage gap. On the other hand, in Shakespeare 's Romeo & Juliet, Juliet is an example of a strong female character. With Romeo and Juliet’s relationship, Juliet is the dominant partner, unlike the stereotypical thought of the time that the man would hold all the power of the relationship. Romeo is immature and irrational, so he is not ready to make decisions; however, Juliet is a strong female character, so she has control over Romeo. Unlike most people, even today, Juliet proposed to Romeo “If.../Thy purpose marriage, send me word” (II.iii.143-144) After the party, Juliet questions the importance of names and whether Romeo 's name changes his identity. From the beginning of their relationship, Juliet has control over Romeo. Basically, Romeo chases Juliet and will do anything she says. In the balcony scene, Juliet already has control over Romeo. She is on the balcony above Romeo, which is symbolic of her power over him and her strength. Juliet can be characterized as strong, powerful, and rational because she thinks that the marriage is rushed and only agrees to it when she is the the proposing to Romeo. Juliet tells Romeo if he wants to get married, tell her when and where and she will, but she says it so that she showing her dominance over the engagement Additionally, before she proposes, Romeo attempts to swear by the moon for her; however, she demands that he does not swear by the moon.
