2.) I believe gender does play a significant part in this story. The author shows the different dynamics between a quiet girl who is starting to come into her own verses a young man who is sure of himself. For starters, the author shows the little girl as timid when she barely says her name with enough volume for the young man to hear after he gets her to come out of her hiding place. Then, he wins her over with his charm leaving her to her first kind of love. So, in her attempt to please him, Sylvia slips from her home and hunts down the white heron’s nest only to realize she cannot hand over the beautiful creature who had just shown her his secret. One way is among siblings. Sibling rivalry happens a lot, so instead of telling on each other to their parent they keep it a secret. For example, coming in late after curfew, sneaking a snack before dinner, not telling who broke their mother’s favorite vase. Another way is among friends. Keeping each other secrets even from each other if that is what the other person wants.
6.) I can see some of the reasons behind the ideas where Caesar is Louisa’s “repressed sexuality.” Caesar and Louisa have both been in a kind of prison for fourteen years. Caesars being chained up while Louisa’s is being caught in a promise waiting for a man who promised to marry her to return. She also fears the dog’s freedom from the bonds that hold him. Almost like the bonds that are holding her in the state of limbo in which she has been living in for so long.
8.) The stories “A White Heron” and “A New England Nun,” are based in realism. First, being the lack of a hero in either story; however, each holds a main character who makes a choice out of the options put before them. This meant that the characters knew there was no going back on their decision after it was done.
