When deciding to participate in middle school band class, most students are required to choose an instrument to play. Society's views on gender make student’s choices limited because people who identify as male are more inclined to pick a “masculine” instrument while people who identify as female pick “feminine” instruments. The first study performed on this subject was by Harold F. Abeles and Susan Yank Porter in 1978. In their study instruments were laid out in front of college students, some music majors and some not.
