Gender Roles In Antonia

Antonia’s character purports the system of reversed gender roles set up in the novel. This is something that Cather likes about her. In the story, Antonia calls the shots, does the field work, strengthens the muscles and keeps her life rolling. For instance, Mr. Harling prohibits Antonia from attending the e weekend dance. Antonia consequently chooses to leave her family so that she is able to lead an independent life. She is also not ashamed of taking the role of a man in her life, she stands for herself. When her father dies, Antonia adopts most of her father’s responsibilities. In the end, Antonia takes responsibility and pride in her baby even when others talk ill of her for having a baby out of wedlock. From the extract, it is evident …show more content…
Jim does not also understand how Antonia feels for him. However, some few episodes in the novel could reveal Antonio’s feelings. For instance, when they first met, Antonio tries to give Jim her ring. Nevertheless it’s hard to scrutinize whether this is a sign of gratitude for Jim teaching her English or a sign that she had a crush on him. When they are on the roof together observing the storm, readers anticipate something romantic; however, Cather keeps the whole episode platonic. Later in the book, Jim gets jealous as he thinks that Antonia has feelings for Charley while Antonia gets mad when Jim and Lena flirt. However it’s hard to tell whether Antonia is jealous or is protective of her friend. Antonia does not unveil her feelings, this character intrigues Cather since it keeps the readers on their toes asking questions, making the reading fun.
Antonia’s character could also be based upon what she symbolizes. To Jim, she symbolizes the freedom and beauty of the natural landscape of Nebraska. He pictures her eyes as” big an d warm and full of light, like the sun shining on brown pools in the wood,” he also notes that in her cheeks she has a glow of rich, dark color and that “ her brown hair is curly and wild-looking.” Antonia also symbolizes the Americans who helped in the establishment of the American West. Her spirit and strength depict the determination of the historically vital group of

I have chosen this topic for my investigation as I find mythical (fictional) movies to be fascinating and am especially interested in the link between the famous movie, “The Wizard of Oz” and the prequel, “Oz the Great and Powerful”, notionally set 20 years before the events of the original film. Made in 2013, the prequel focuses on the character Theodora, who is presented initially as a good witch but who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West in the later film. I decided to study how the scriptwriters use her language to reinforce and exert power over the other characters. There are many techniques the scriptwriters use to portray Theodora in the film, for example through the use of imperatives and interrogatives which makes the audience realise the power shifts between the characters. I anticipate that in the film Oz the Great and Powerful she will use imperatives and Interrogatives towards the character of Oz, as he is a new character of whom she has little knowledge.…

Upon further research, I discovered that Cather’s creation of Antonia is actually a play off of a genuine character in her nonfictional life, a girl named Annie who was also an immigrant dealing with a father committing suicide. This is one of the first and most important reasons for Cather admiring Antonia; she is based off of a part of her life. Cather decided to take someone she knew personally and grew to understand, and perhaps found great interest in, and write them in the glory she saw in them. Cather also admired Antonia’s inner radiance.…

Miss Cather seems to definitely admire Antonia, as reflected in her writings. There are many different qualities about Antonia that are expressed in a favorable light. She was a beautiful girl with “such fine brown legs and arms, and splendid color in her cheeks – like those big dark red plums.” But as we all know; looks isn't everything. She had “strong independent natures” and “deep down there was a kind of joviality, a relish of life, not over-delicate, but very invigorating.”…

Gender roles in historic literature are aspects that are often talked about, but very rarely argued, particularly in conversation–but also in academic articles and scholarly discussions. Too often we see injustice concerning women in plays and novels, but instead of criticizing those stereotypes, the majority of readers tend to simply dismiss them as results of another time. In Macbeth, it is easy to see why the woman do not hold positions of power and have many negative associations, mostly due to women being confined to the role of homemaker in the seventeenth century, but the more interesting thing to do is argue those stereotypes. While some may see Macbeth as a fairly equal play in the sense that there are several female roles, some even…

There is always risk of self aggrandizing when it comes to having a first person narrative because the author knows all that has happened and all that will happen and with Jim perhaps he wanted to seem more heroic and so he made life in Nebraska seem more dramatic than it actually was and made Antonia's life seem more dull and heartbreaking than it really…
