“Run the World (Girls)” by Beyoncé is a popular feminist anthem. First, its Queen Bey, living proof that a woman can run the world. Secondly, in her song she sings “Strong enough to bear the children, then get back to business. You can’t hold me”. (#admirable) Despite our sweeping achievements, inequality today is still missing. Women all over the world are fighting for equal rights. We are fighting for equality, economic, political, and social grounds. Antigone fights against patriarchy’s impulsive demands and Beyoncé occupies herself with gender roles showing us that women do and can hold power. Polyneices was branded a traitor of Thebes. She went to her sister Ismene for aid but Ismene refuses because ‘we two are alone and we are girls /girls cannot force their way against men’. Antigone answered ‘yet I will’. (You go girl) The two sisters disagreed about what should be done. Ismene for her part believes women are weak and should not fight against the men and to simply allow men to make the decisions. Antigone wants to violate Kreon’s law and she’s also angry at Ismene for being so passive towards the will of men. She believes that religious laws requiring burial are more important than laws of the city and will face death trying. She then decides to go bury her brother by herself. Antigone shows feminist logic, strength and respect for the strong familial bond that she shares with her family when she chooses to challenge a powerful male society. Even willing to become 'a bride of death' to achieve her goal.
Antigone was later caught burying her brother’s body and brought before Kreon. She readily admits that she is responsible for burying Polyneices when asked by Kreon why she disobeyed him and she knew it was against the law. She then says ‘if you call that law Zeus does not. Kreon resents Antigone’s moralizing and then vows to execute her. Antigone possessed a strength unknown to women in ancient Greece and this Kreon realized made Antigone the perfect leader. He replied “No woman shall be the master while I live…What evils are not wrought by Anarchy… Therefore, we must maintain authority…Than hear it said, a woman proved our match.” Kreon’s reasoning is based on pure sexism rather than rationality.
