The gender roles have evolved drastically over the decades. According to Wikipedia.org, a gender role is a set of societal norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for a person based on their actual or perceived sex. Gender roles are typically based on different expectations of individuals based on their sex. Sex refers to a person’s biological status as a male or female. The roles assigned to a particular sex depends on many factors. The typical roles assigned to women were the household duties. The duties consisted of cooking meal, cleaning rooms, taking care of the children and their individual needs. The men were dimmed the breadwinners and went out into the workforce to provide for their families. A question could be asked if gender roles are based on biology or culture? My parents share the household responsibilities and don’t follow the traditional stereotypical gender roles. My mother can be seen mowing the lawn or taking out the trash. On the other hand, my father will cook, wash dishes or laundry. It’s a joint effort not one doing more than the other or only doing jobs considered strictly for a man or woman.
When it comes to the changing roles of women in the workplace the public has diverse views. Most men support women’s rights in the workplace. They seem to agree it should be equal as long as the standards are not lowered just to “make it fair” in the jobs that require physical strength.
