Instead of men viewing them as incapable or judging them based on their appearance, women should be hired if they have the right qualifications for a job. However, women also need to continue working and being key members in the community in order to demonstrate their own value; they are the ones with the ability to dedicate their time and have commitment to significantly change the way men and society view them. The problems of generalization and discrimination stem from women themselves, they have the power to change and have an impact on this issue where they can hopefully solve this issue. Have you ever noticed that men are typically the managers at a company? Or the CEOs of a corporation? Or managing partners at a law firm? Or principals at a school? There are many careers that are dominated by the male figure, and that is a representation that women and men are not valued equally in the workforce. This is not an easy task to accomplish, but with a variety of steps and motivation, it can be possible. To address the issue of the generalizations placed on new mothers, Nelson suggests a solution that could help. Even though women often take time off to care for children or other reasons, that should not limit them to just completing the role of a mother. During that time period where women need to take time off, they should “do something, even if it’s small — even if it’s ten hours a week. Something paid is preferable to volunteer work but if you have nothing else, then volunteer” (as quoted in Nelson 416). Nelson believes that by volunteering or doing a part-time job, women can show how they still have perseverance. Also, women need to understand that they should not be constrained by the stereotypes in the media or even by men. If they can prove that they have the will and motivation to work, they can force others to see that as well. Women can change their portrayal by changing how they are perceived. If they want to be seen as strong and independent — then they need to be that and demonstrate those characteristics in their lives.
