Alicia’s the head of the home in her life. She’s the one with the better paid job and she’s working more than her boyfriend of husband Sean. Sean is a history teacher who, as it seems like in the short story, takes care of both Bug and Alicia. Sean is the one taking care of Bug while Alicia is working. She comes home one day finding Sean with Bug sleeping on his on the couch: “At home I find Sean on the couch, Bug asleep across his lap.” (line 76). It says in the text that Alicia most likely feels overcommitted to her job. She feels like she’s not there for her family and she can finally see that, therefore she wants to spend more time with them and it shows in her saying: “I mentally reenlist in my family, re-upping us again.” (lines 85-86). Alicia refers to her job in the army by using the phrase “reenlist” which means that you apply to the army after being in it once already, so she’s not that imbedded in her family quite yet because she still uses phrases about the army.
“Bagana” is a short story that deals with gender roles, and starts the debate whether the traditional household gender roles are wrong or not. Alicia Brennan tells us about the challenges that comes with being the head of the family, as well as her fight against the traditional gender roles which is portrayed by Daddio and his family in the story.
