One of the many reasons women earn less than men overall is because of the trend in the labor work force. Women tend to gravitate toward jobs that pay less overall, an example of this but not limited to is teachers, nurses, caregivers and sanitation workers. Those are but examples of some of the jobs that over all see a higher trend of women other than men. It is no coincidence that when you think of a doctor you think of a male figure and when you think of a nurse you think of a woman. Men tend to gravitate toward higher paying jobs and careers like the sciences. Some other factors to take into consideration is that men tend to reach higher positions in the workforce like CEO’s and managerial positions that require more time investment. The reason why women don't tend to pursue higher positions is because they usually try to find a work and family balance in their lives. When trying to rationalize that women are mothers and need to raise children and take a pregnancy leave, this affects their qualifications for a job (Thomas, S. R. 2010). It is perceived more often than not as a liability being a woman in the work place. Men don't have the same expectations when it comes to a family, their expectations are being the providers which in turn means they make their work/jobs a priority in most cases not the family life. To combat these preconceived notions and gendered discrimination in the workforce the U.S. government has passed legislation to help fight these types of discriminations.
