Imagine two people interview for the same job. Both people have the same education, the same income, and the same skills and talents. One would assume with these similarities that they would be payed equally. The only problem is, out of those two people interviewing, one was a woman and one was a man. Because of their gender woman sometimes only earn 65% of what a man would earn according to the “US Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey”. There has always been a gap in how much full-time working male employees earn and how much full-time working female employees earn. As reported by the “Joint Economic Committee and the United States Congress”, Women are getting paid about “$4 for every $5 a man is getting paid.” The wage gap has been …show more content…
The main problem here is that Women are getting paid substantially less them men for doing the same job. This is incredibly unfair to women for several reasons. Women are doing the same job. They are giving at least the same amount of effort as men, if not working harder. Another thing that was found by the “American Association of University Women” is that very few women “climb the ladder” and gain higher positions thus losing money. But there is a solution to the gender pay gap. There have been several laws and acts put in place to stop the discrimination. Regardless of laws currently in place, women are still being paid less by their employers. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed in 2009 by Barack Obama. The Act “states the EEOC's longstanding position that each paycheck that contains discriminatory compensation is a separate violation regardless of when the discrimination began.” The Lilly Ledbetter was the first piece of legislation that Obama signed during his presidency. Lilly Ledbetter discovered her boss was paying her less for the doing the same job as her male counterpart. She took her claim to the …show more content…
President Obama was very active in making the workplace and equal environment for women. In 2014, there was a Presidential Memorandum stating that the Secretary of Labor had to “propose a new regulation requiring federal contractors to submit summary data on compensation paid to their employees, including by race and gender”. Title VII is in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It prohibits employers to discriminate against their employees. Title VII also applies to private and public colleges and universities. Title VII says “It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer … to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.” These Acts and laws need to be enforced more. They are very great acts and they need to have stricter consequences. Too many companies and corporations are unfairly paying their female employees. Another thing that could be done to eliminate the gender wage gap is making new strict laws about discrimination and pay compensation. If it weren’t for people like Lilly Ledbetter and Barack Obama, people wouldn’t be provided with the resources that they need to file a claim
