Introduction
When referring to the way gender influences a child’s cognitive development, it is evident that certain outside factors play a significant role. This research report will specifically analyse the role of gender in a primary school setting, with the independent variables being the effect of parenting styles, the self-efficacy levels of children and their overall language development.
All caregivers have their own ideologies and principles in regards to the correct way “to nurture and discipline their children”. Through research conducted from the 1960’s to present day, it is evident that certain characteristics of parents could be categorized into groups. C, Scott, the differentiation between genders increases with the age of the children. It states that girls are more likely to be raised in an authoritative disciplinary household with the associated stereotypical attributes of the gender. However, boys would be more susceptible to and benefit from a combination of authoritative and permissive disciplinary structure. The differences between the styles and the effect that each one has on both the parent and child are the same as that found through previous research. An example is that “inconsistent parenting” can lead to dramatic increase of ______ child behaviour in various contexts. This report will:
• Analyse current research articles and discuss data in relation to each hypothesis

• Determine whether the findings of the questionnaires conducted by K-6 students of the Riverina, their parental guardians and teachers either support or dispute other findings

• “Contribute to developing pre-service teachers knowledge and professional practice in the AITSL Graduate Standards”

Method-
Participants

The participants are separated into the categories my hypotheses are based on. The demographic is one hundred and ten boys and one hundred and forty one girls aged between 5 and 12, their parents and teachers located in the Riverina.
Parenting styles-
Two hundred and sixty two parents completed the PAQ-R in August 2014. Data collected from this survey is regarding the focus subject group of children in years K-6.

Self-efficacy-
Pre-service teachers acquired data from two hundred and fifty one children regarding their self-efficacy levels.

Literacy development-
Pre-service teachers acquired data from two hundred and fifty one children regarding their literacy development.
