Being fit can be a desirable trait for any person; becoming fit becomes an ideal. The stigma that is placed onto society from society creates this ideal. Seeing men and women in both studios made that apparent. Which gender was more prevalent in which studio was something that inetrested me throughout the course of my obervations. My observations of the cardio room struck my curiosity because of the difference I noticed between men and women who were exercising. Different parts of our bodies symbolize aspects of "masculinity" and "femininity". It would be difficult to look at body shapes or types objectively within these observations because of how social norms form how we view them as desrirable. The hegemonic definition of masculinity and emphazised femininity are important in this way (Kimmel 2000). My observations showed that different activities and exercises in the gym were performed as a relfection of gender roles and to deviate from these roles would be seen as wrong in society.
