Nowadays, the mainstream media’s representations of women are objectifying. A trend that is developing in mass media today is the objectification of women in society. There is strong focus on women as sexual objects rather than women, specifically in advertising, magazines, music videos, films and television. Sexualized images of the female body in the mass media become the object for the pleasure of men and an instrument for marketing.

Objectification of women represented by sexualized images has long been a trend in today’s mass media in many countries and cultures. Media gaze, especially advertisement, put strong focus on female as sexual objects rather than human beings. Why this phenomenon is so prevalent, the most obvious outward reason is because the more the media uses sexual content regarding female, the more closely the “eyeballs” of audience, especially but not exclusively those of male audience, are attracted and they are more willing to consume the products being promoted. Nevertheless, the deeper reason lies in the socialization of gender difference and finally in the culture. Of course, sexualized images are not always objecting female body in the mass media, both male and female have sexualized images in mass media, but females are much more often the victims. Female sexual objectification is dehumanizing, as a result, women who grow up in a society with widespread sexual objectification tend to view themselves as objects of desire for others, and this is internalized sexual objectification. The harm of objectification may cause mental health problems. Beyond the internal effects on female, others may see sexually objectified female as less competent and worthy of empathy.
