What determines your future, is it nature or nurture? Or is it simply up to the sex one is born as and the rules society has based solely on that. Gender roles play a huge part in what children grow up to think and believe about themselves and their views of the adult world. Gender norms are a set of ideas or rules about how each gender should behave. “Cross cultural studies reveal that are aware of gender roles by age two or three” (Gender and sociology) ; these gender norms begin as young as when children begin to play with toys. In today's generation their are many characteristics and actions that are seen as normal for one sex and taboo for the other. These double standards begin at birth, the second a baby is born they are assigned either a masculine or feminine role that they are expected to conform too. An example of this is in society is that it is seen as natural for a men be highly sexual and embrace their sexuality but when a women wants to behave in the same manner, these women are called names and shamed for doing the same exact thing, on the flip side women are raised to be more emotional and embrace their feelings but men are expected to have this strong, aggressive persona and when men step out of this they can be looked as “weak” or “sensitive.” Gary an international director of an organization that engages men around the world about gender equality states that “Men who have more rigid views of what it means to be men are more likely to suicidal thoughts, more likely to be depressed, less likely to report they’re happy with life overall, less likely to take care of their health, more likely to own guns, the list goes on, and there is something extremely toxic about this version of masculinity out there.”(The past).
