Gender Neutral Bathrooms In Colleges

Gender neutral bathrooms in college can sometimes be an uncomfortable topic to discuss for adults and adolescences. Public bathrooms have been segregated since before most of us can even remember. A women’s restroom on one side and a men’s restroom on the other side. It has always been that way and some feel that it should always stay that way. Why fix something that is not broken? However, to the transgender community, it is broken. The question that comes to their mind is, “Which restroom should I use?” The simple daily act of visiting the restroom is a struggle and some have worse experiences than others. That’s where gender neutral bathrooms come to save the day and stop those daily questions. Many colleges and universities work hard at improving inclusion and diversity on their campuses. What better way to improve campuses than implementing all gender bathrooms. Transgenders typically feel stuck between a rock and a hard place from wanting to use the bathroom of the gender that they identify with, not the gender they were born as. The University of New Orleans will be that place where most of us decide who we are and who we will be. Being in a comfortable and worry-free environment will absolutely help with the journey. For some transgender individuals who are still trying to figure out their identity, an all gender bathroom fits just right. Gender segregated restrooms are one of the last gender divides. Although I understand the severity of the opposing argument’s opinions in this dispute, I still believe the successes will outweigh the negatives.
