It is assumed that Muslims make up a majority of terrorist acts, to deflect other problems that can be occurring. Media secures this image as well by continuing to portray them as terrorists. In reality approximately 6% of terrorist acts are committed by Muslims. This keeps the uneducated people against Muslims, and creating a never ending cycle. Making sure that white people are at the top of the social ladder, and cannot be brought down. This creates divisions in families, since the minority group is being unrepresented and discriminated against. It pits families against each other as well who do not share the same values. Consequences of blaming Muslims for terrorist attacks is creating widespread islamophobia. Thus, also creating panic and Muslim death because of it. People get scared and make rash decisions that cannot be taken back. This was the one Benedictine Value that stood out to me in class while I was learning. Each topic that was presented may have shared common interests with the other values but it all seemed to boil down to respect. “Cherishing and promoting all human life…” This part of the definition really stands out to me because it mainly goes unnoticed. We forget that no one is below us, or that we are better than other people. This can attribute towards gender, race, culture, religion, etc. We learned all about discrimination people feel in Sociology, and some of the changes that have been made or are in progress. It is easy to disregard other people’s opinions, thoughts, or lifestyle when they do not agree with ours. Expanding my knowledge through this class on social issues can broaden my view on how the world works. With injustices and inequalities, we can learn to fight back. To make this world a better place, that it more accepting of people. CSS does an excellent job of trying to make sure that respect is everywhere, and no one is left out. They present many topics on social issues, so that we can learn from past experiences. They expand our horizons so that we can pass on the Benedictine tradition, and allow all the values to be present.
