The population of advanced countries is known to be growing at a lower rate than those of developping countries. But more than a low growth, some countries actually experience a decline of their population. Japan became one of those countries in 2009, and as of 2016, has a negative growth rate of 0.19% according to the CIA. There are several factors that account for this situation, and challenges that Japan will face in the near future as a consequence of its demographic descent.
One of the main source on this worrysome situation is a considerable decrease of the country 's birth rate, which is of 7.8 per 1000 in 2016. As Japan as a 9.6 per 1000 death rate, the country is therefore failing to renew its population ( "People and Society"). This low birth rate reflects the changes occuring in the Japanese 21st century society. Young Japanese enjoy the perks of being single and are less attracted to a marital life. Instead, they chose to focus and a career, especially Japanese women who are finally given a chance to shine professionally.
