The question of whether gender is still an issue in contemporary arts is still a huge issue. Gender inequality and sexism is still a controversial issue in contemporary art. During the nineteenth century in relations to gender, there were very strong and persuasive perceptions of how men and women should conduct themselves. Men and women were expected to fill separate spheres of society. However, after enough women stood in protests, and attended political speeches, women began taking on serious roles, and many impactful women’s rights movements began to take place. The movements brought together many leading figures of the 19th-century women’s rights movements, some including, Sojourner Truth. In other words, Lacy believes that the goal of feminist art is not having a specific style of art that unify feminist artist, but more so revolved around combined aspects from various movements and media of different types of art that presents a message about women’s experiences and the need for gender equality. For example, as she continued to progress with addressing issues beyond the art world, in December 1977, Lacy along with Leslie Labowitz-Starus endured in “In Mourning and In Rage”, which was a media performance staged on the steps of city hall, responses to the inadequate media coverage the artists saw in response to the Hillside Strangler, which was a serial killer who targeted women. Suzanne Lacy meticulously states, ten women were strangled and dumped on the side of the roads; in the references to the women victims, participants from the women’s building, the rape hotline alliance, and city council joined with the feminist community and families of the victims creating a public ritual of rage as well as grief. There were ten tall women robed in black, who each announced a different form of violence against women. The ten women yelled and stated “In memory of our sisters, we fight back!” all representing the capacity of self-defense”. All together with feminist theories and activist, the feminist innovative artists have given chances for women in art. Lacy has plenty of work to show for along with thoughts that promote gender being relevant in art, the connections between gender and art, and the different aspects surrounding it still being an issue in art. A woman name Julia Bryan-Wilson, who is an associated professor in the Department of History of Art at the University of California, Berkeley. Bryan- Wilson teaches modern and contemporary art, with a focus on art since the 1960’s; her research interest includes theories of artistic labor, feminist and queer theory, collaborative practices, performance, craft histories, video, photography, and visual culture of the nuclear age (UC Berkeley History of Art Department). As I interpreted an essay that she had written named “Dirty Commerce: Art Work and Sex work since the 1970s”, she examines projects done by artists Carlos Ginzburg and Suzanne Lacy which they elaborate on certain subjects and issues, such as feminism and prostitution, prostitutes in art, women critics, and women performance
