This past November boasted the first Barbie commercial to feature a boy, and that ad isn’t even going to air on television. Fifty-six years since Barbie made her debut and this whole time ads didn’t feature boys playing with her. The whole world seems to be broken up into a divide between male and female, the pink and blue. The romantic languages of French, Italian, and Spanish give all of their words a gender. That divide is called the gender binary. The concept of the gender binary cannot be broached without an understanding of what gender is. Gender is a concept that most people do not think about, girls are girls and boys are boys, but, in reality, it is much more complicated than that. Gender is described by as ‘the complex interrelationship between an individual’s sex (gender biology), one’s internal sense of self as male, female, both or neither (gender identity) as well as one’s outward presentations and behaviors (gender expression)(Understanding Gender)’. The layperson 's concept of gender is usually of biological sex. That divide of being forced into a box has an effect on everyone it has a profound effect on girls.
