They are often seen as the primary caretaker of children, the nurturer, the one who stays at home while the male is at work, and as the one who cooks and does all of the housework. After a paid work day, women often go home to perform housework or childcare and this is referred to as “the second shift.” The second shift is why it is said women work longer hours than most men in a day in most countries. A recent United Nations report found that women in the United States work on average twenty-five minutes more than men each day. But this is not the same for all countries, where women in developed countries are performing housework at a considerably higher rate; Austria (45 minutes) and Italy (103 minutes).
