In the past women were viewed as inferior to men and sadly, today those views still exist in parts of the world. Movies in Hollywood today depict how women continue to be viewed in the world and one movie, particularly exceeds at showing the issues there still is today with women’s rights. She’s the Man, made in 2006, a relatively new movie, is based on Shakespeare 's play The Twelfth Night. This shows us that although many years have past many thoughts on women have stayed the same. Andy Fickman’s She’s the Man depicts gender inequality, how men and women treat each other, and stereotypes, in order to show the issue of how women are perceived as less than men and that they can’t complete the same tasks as men by the majority of society. These teams would be cut causing girls to have less options than boys when trying out for a sport. Title IX requires there should be equal teams for boys and girls to tryout for resulting in both sexes being treated equal. Another way to call attention to gender inequality is the Bechdel test. To pass the test the movie has to have the following requirements, “1. It has to have at least two women in it, 2. who talk to each other, 3. about something besides a man”. (Rossalyn Warren) After seeing the movie She’s the Man a copious amount of times my opinion is, the movie fails to pass the test. The movie only has a few female characters, Viola, Viola’s mom, Olivia, Monique, Eunice, Kia and Yvonne. Viola spends the majority of the movie dressed as a guy so any conversations with a girl I wouldn’t count as two girls talking. Her mom has a few conversations with Viola but mostly about being a debutante which is stereotypical for girls and most conversations between them conclude with talking about her brother or ex-boyfriend. Sexism has been around forever and the thoughts of men being superior to women still exist today. The message of the movie was to show that girls can perform the same activities as guys just as well, if not better. Even though America has rules that are helping men and women view each other as equals there are still have men that feel they are superior. A scene in She’s the Man that I discussed in the paragraph above provides a great example of men thinking they exceed women. When the girls ask to tryout for the boys team the group of soccer players laugh at the idea of girls trying out for the team. It’s obvious they look down upon the girls because of their gender and not for their soccer playing skills. Another scene in the movie shows the issue with how men treat women as less than them. When Viola first gets to school dressed as Sebastian the guys determine that he’s weird and seem to not like him. In order to have Duke and his friends to see that Sebastian’s “cool” Viola and Paul, the guy who turned into Sebastian, come up with a plan. They use Kia and Yvonne, who are Viola’s friends, as Sebastian’s ex girlfriends. They come up to Sebastian saying how great he was at his former school and saying how much they miss him.
