Gender Inequality In Andy Fickman's The Twelfth Night

Decent Essays
In the past women were viewed as inferior to men and sadly, today those views still exist in parts of the world. Movies in Hollywood today depict how women continue to be viewed in the world and one movie, particularly exceeds at showing the issues there still is today with women’s rights. She’s the Man, made in 2006, a relatively new movie, is based on Shakespeare 's play The Twelfth Night. This shows us that although many years have past many thoughts on women have stayed the same. Andy Fickman’s She’s the Man depicts gender inequality, how men and women treat each other, and stereotypes, in order to show the issue of how women are perceived as less than men and that they can’t complete the same tasks as men by the majority of society. These teams would be cut causing girls to have less options than boys when trying out for a sport. Title IX requires there should be equal teams for boys and girls to tryout for resulting in both sexes being treated equal. Another way to call attention to gender inequality is the Bechdel test. To pass the test the movie has to have the following requirements, “1. It has to have at least two women in it, 2. who talk to each other, 3. about something besides a man”. (Rossalyn Warren) After seeing the movie She’s the Man a copious amount of times my opinion is, the movie fails to pass the test. The movie only has a few female characters, Viola, Viola’s mom, Olivia, Monique, Eunice, Kia and Yvonne. Viola spends the majority of the movie dressed as a guy so any conversations with a girl I wouldn’t count as two girls talking. Her mom has a few conversations with Viola but mostly about being a debutante which is stereotypical for girls and most conversations between them conclude with talking about her brother or ex-boyfriend. Olivia seems to talk to Viola dressed as Sebastian or other guys for the majority of the movie and when she talked to Monique it was …show more content…
Sexism has been around forever and the thoughts of men being superior to women still exist today. The message of the movie was to show that girls can perform the same activities as guys just as well, if not better. Even though America has rules that are helping men and women view each other as equals there are still have men that feel they are superior. A scene in She’s the Man that I discussed in the paragraph above provides a great example of men thinking they exceed women. When the girls ask to tryout for the boys team the group of soccer players laugh at the idea of girls trying out for the team. It’s obvious they look down upon the girls because of their gender and not for their soccer playing skills. Another scene in the movie shows the issue with how men treat women as less than them. When Viola first gets to school dressed as Sebastian the guys determine that he’s weird and seem to not like him. In order to have Duke and his friends to see that Sebastian’s “cool” Viola and Paul, the guy who turned into Sebastian, come up with a plan. They use Kia and Yvonne, who are Viola’s friends, as Sebastian’s ex girlfriends. They come up to Sebastian saying how great he was at his former school and saying how much they miss him. When they walk away Sebastian says “I’d tap that” to Kia and taps Yvonne’s butt to make it seem as if he’s “cool”. When Monique comes in, who’s the real Sebastian’s

Broyde, published by CNN, and titled “Transgender Bathroom Issue: A Solution?”, gives a synopsis of the issue of letting people go into the bathroom of their identified gender, rather than just their birth gender. The article opens by just explaining how that this topic got into the limelight when the supreme court took up a case of a high school student trying to use a boy’s bathroom, and whether or not that should be allowed (Broyde). Broyde then goes on to explain that in many religions, including his own, using the bathroom is seen as an extreme private time and shouldn’t be shared with anyone regardless of gender. Then, Broyde gives what he believes to be the best solution to this problem is to make…

In many countries, people treat women as if they are lesser than the men around them because of the stereotypes that are associated with each gender. The stereotype that women are supposed to be fragile, emotional and graceful makes them seem as if they are unable to perform certain tasks. The misconception gives men the idea that females are to stick with jobs that require minimum physical strength. Compared to the real world, the movie She’s…

Gender equality has been debatably the most pressing issue for the last century. Unfortunately for many this equilibrium between the rights of men and women has yet to be reached. Throughout the play A Streetcar Named Desire, it becomes clear that characters conform to gender roles, which have been set forth in our history. More specifically in the way men treat women and how women expect to be treated. These gender roles have been changed over time, but many examples of these events can still be found today.…

“Don't shut yourself up in a bandbox because you are a woman, but understand what is going on, and educate yourself to take your part in the world's work, for it all affects you and yours.” Louisa Alcott, a known and outspoken female rights activist, write what all women are desperate to hear. You see, in society today, there is no mistaking that women’s rights have come a long way from what they were in the times of, oh, let’s say Shakespeare. However, that does not mean that women are treated correctly yet. There is still sexism ingrained in our day to day ventures, the wage gap is an ever present thing, and the presence of women in power-…

By definition, the word “gender” refers particularly to the biological differences of a male and female. However, gender can certainly be interpreted through the nature of human beings and the roles in which men and women partake in society. The movie It Happened One Night illustrates a distinction of gender in American society by characterizing the lead woman, Ellie Andrews, as a helpless and vulnerable individual, while the lead male, Peter Warne, is depicted as the exact opposite: firm and persistent. This juxtaposition also coincides with general stereotypes in American society; for example, the stereotype of males’ having more power than women. Considering the aspect of gender distinction, Peter Warne exemplifies a dominating male figure in the movie over Ellie Andrews.…

It also displays the sad reality of today’s society that women are just seen as objects and that men are deemed as real men depending on how many girls they can get and on how they behave towards women, especially in front of other men. She’s the Man exhibits the sad reality of today’s social gender norms. This movie’s message was more than just winning a soccer game. It is about attempting to prove to the world that a young woman dressed and portraying the image of a man can compete in today’s male dominated world and succeed. Sexual harassment has always been, and still is, an extremely controversial topic. Some people tend to think that sexual harassment cases are all stemmed from lies made up by victims to gain attention or sympathy. Others, however, see sexual harassment as a serious crime that has been locked away in a vault and ignored by society. Whichever side one takes, the fact that sexual harassment and sexual discrimination laws play an important part in many aspects of society still stands. From the beginning of time, humans have struggled in deciding what rights certain groups should or should not have, and, slowly, everyone started to be set upon the same plane.…
