Inequality is an inescapable part of society, it is one of societies key features. The inevitability of inequality does not excuse adverse inequalities such as extreme economic inequality, or harmful gender inequality. Sociology looks at inequalities and how they make society function the way it does. Gender studies definitely has a gendered stance on the subject of inequality, it looks at inequalities, as they are affected by gender. Sociology is an advantageous discipline to analyze the subject of inequality with because inequalities affect society expansively. In this case study, the main factors of gender inequality which are examined are “fertility, education, and employment patterns,” (Moghadam, 1991, p. 1335). In Muslim societies, there are many contributors to gender inequality and this case study uses a plentiful amount of quantitative data to identify how many women are undergoing this inequality. It is argued that gender inequality in Iran is perpetuated by “high fertility rates [as they] limit women’s roles and choices” (Moghadam, 1991, p. 1336). This is an example of how Moghadam uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative data as it would be extremely hard to communicate the hardships felt by these women by using exclusively qualitative or quantitative data. This case study uses an ample amount of tables and graphs to accentuate information such as literacy rates in comparison to men and women amongst different age groups (Moghadam, 1991, p. 1340). At the end of the case study Moghadam concludes by divulging what happens in Islamic societies for women and, as cited by Ward in his 1984 text, how they act considering they have been “Stripped of their economic and productive roles” (Moghadam, 1991, p. 1345). In regards to the analysis of inequalities, both of these disciplines propel both an informative and narrative approach, as can be seen in the case studies above. The concepts and theories presented in this essay are very much interdisciplinary as they both are important in the sociological and the gender studies approach of inequalities. The gender studies approach to inequalities goes into great depth about how other inequalities, such as economic and educational, undeniably perpetuate the inequality amongst genders. Sociology is an extremely important discipline in the study of inequalities because it is a thriving phenomenon within societies globally.
