A study on the Global Gender Gap Index was done by the World Economic Forum (2014) which ranked the United States as 20th in the world out of 142 countries on the gender equality scale. This ranking system compared gender gaps in the United States to other countries on the basis of economic, political, and educational standards. As shown in this scale, gender discrimination and inequality are commonplace in countries around the world. Historical gender biases, such as appointing a certain role within a society to a specific gender, have played a huge part in the development of sexism. Studies have determined that when it comes to gender, “preferences are subtle and are based on pre-existing gender biases reinforced by cultural stereotypes” (Women in Neuroscience, 2015). Through socialization, the process by which people learn to behave within a society, younger generations are introduced to and influenced by preceding gender stereotypes and gender roles. “Girls are taught since a very early age that they have to obey, and boys – that they have to be strong and to be leaders” (Marinova, 2003). Usually, girls learn from toys that are associated with women’s duties, such as caring for dolls or preparing food in toy kitchens, while boys play with toys like action heroes and weapons (Marinova, 2003). Seven years ago, President Obama signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act which made it easier for women to sue their employers if their male counterparts were receiving more money for the same work. However, even after all this time, Congress has failed at passing even more aggressive legislation that will aid in ending the economic and financial aspects of gender inequality (Lachman, 2016). People are becoming antsy and want quick change to a societal ill that has been around for dozens of centuries. Consequently, many states now have to take action due to the lack of haste in Congress. Will there ever be equality amongst genders within the work force? Will our federal government help employees achieve equal financial statuses for the same
