To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a novel that takes place is a small town in Alabama called Maycomb.You see through the eyes of an adult male and a six year old girl, Scout. Scout and her brother Jem face many obstacles throughout the book. The main one being a trial of a white female, Mayella Ewell, and an African American male, Tom. It’s decided by race, gender, and class. Gender plays an important role in this trial. By looking at the genders involved, Tom could have been considered innocent because he was a male. The case is about more than just gender so Mayella could be seen as powerful. She wanted it to be about more than just male and female because if it was based off of that, she may not have been able to get what she wanted.
