Missing Million Women Analysis

As seen in both “Selections from Once Upon Quinceañera,” and “Missing: 163 Million Women,” Julia Alvarez and Mara Hvistendahl explore the impacts of gender imbalances in innumerable societies. Though several societies continue to progress, they have become brainwashed to portray certain lifestyles. For example, both European and American societies continually progress. Wearing leggings in European societies remain a recent trend that most men in Europe seem to follow. In contradistinction to the European society, it would be unusual to encounter a man from an American society wearing leggings. “Although she did not want one, she was obligated to have a big quince party because of her father’s position. […] “You work hard, you do things for the welfare of your family.” (qtd. in Alvarez 62) This being made evident, the man in the house is the one working to support the whole family. It is unfair that men have to work in order to support the entire family, while women should not support financially. Such as in a household of six, whereas “the man of the house” has to not only pay the bills, but to supply everyone in the house with necessities and sometimes wants. It is unjustifiable for a man to work tediously for eight hours, and then when he is off the clock he must push himself to get to the events his children might be participating in. Then when he finally gets home the only thing he sees is bills, payments, and expenses. This is utterly unfair for the financial burden of an entire household to be placed on just one person. Although, the expectations of this culture seems to exemplify what a “man is supposed to do” it also allows him to go under a lot of pressure and stress. These expectations start to become detrimental to a man and should be
