Final Paper: Race and Identity Portrayed in Society (Herman Gray)
In today’s society, media stereotypes are inevitable especially in the news and entertainment industries. One of many reasons is widely due to the majority of white media creators in the industry. People identify with the race when it acts like the stereotype of the norm for their race. For example, Asian acting nerdy, black buy being bad and a “thug,” whites as American good guy. This gives a sense to children what the norm is through movies and how they should act. How races should speak and how other races are represented. Referring to Herman Gray’s lecture on diversity and media representation, he focused on a

This is where the fundamentals of unfairness come into attention. Unfairness in race and gender discrimination is caused by lack of diversity. Male characters are portrayed as powerful, strong, and rational. Female characters are portrayed as emotional and sensitive (Lee). One of the most misrepresented race are blacks. Discrimination against African Americans is a perfect example of how races are misrepresented. They focus on crimes, gang violence, and drug use when many of these stories on race are dramatically exaggerated. There’s a lack of attention being paid to the bigger picture of social and economic disparity and increased public support of more rigorous approaches to these social issues. Not only does the media’s reluctance to provide more balanced perspectives of the African-American male population worsen cultural division among all people, these issues authorize judges to hand out more rigid sentences, and the police to shoot indiscriminately, such as the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Donaldson (2015) states, “people of color are individuals, not types,” therefore, our society needs to focus more on balancing the different perspectives and representations being portrayed throughout …show more content…
There are female dominated industries such as, childcare and nursing which are lower paying jobs than male dominated industries such as doctor, business owners, etc. Women are less likely to move up the corporate ladder because they are viewed as far less intelligent than men. Referring to the article, “Your Skirt’s Too Short” by Emily Maguire, she says we need to “broaden the possibilities” and “work on creating a culture in which women are not judged by the length of their skirt or the size of their breasts in which they are safe from sexual harassment and violence regardless of what they chose to wear (Maguire, 2010). Women should be treated equally to men because they share the same qualities in most areas as men and have qualities that some men lack such as the different aspects of physical and mental characteristics. Another degrading portrayal of women in society is mainstream pornography which is “overwhelming misogynous and degrading to women” (Maguire, 2010) and explores the harm it causes to the female performers. In pornography, it demonstrates how men is always dominant and women are used for their pleasure. She points out that the internet has “revolutionized pornography” by removing the need to interact with someone to purchase it – “no porn is unprecedentedly private and unrestricted” therefore, pornography is accessible to people of all ages and the women

On March 3, 1991, Rodney King was brutally beaten by multiple Los Angeles Police officers after pulling over following a high speed chase. Despite the footage of the beating being caught on film, the police officers were acquitted of any wrong doing on April 29, 1992 at 3:15 PM. By 5:15 PM, in response to the verdicts of the police officers, the Los Angeles riots began (Linder, 2001). The riots were a strong reaction to the injustice that was felt in the community and did not incite a social change, but did bring a lot of media attention to the issue of police brutality against minorities (Hollowell, 2009).…

It is clear that America suffers from social inequality and because of this television has been a critical impact on society's views, perspectives, and culture. From time to time, television's hegemonic approach subliminally sends stereotypically negative images of Black people and families. However, shows such as The Cosby Show, and Prince of Bel-Air, went against traditional stereotypes of Black Families by displaying their middle and their upper middle class family lives in distinct ways. Therefore, this paper examines these shows and present ways of how these shows go against the stereotypes and examine marriage, fatherhood, and stability within Black families. Since the beginning, television has not known what to do with black characters.…

Charles E. Silberman, an American journalist and scholar, states that “Race and racism continue to shape American life, as they have for three and a half centuries” (160). In simple terms, the criminal justice system is defined as a continuation of slavery and the Jim Crow laws. Even though slavery and the Jim Crow laws were declared unconstitutional in the 1800s, racism is a factor that is unceasingly taking place within our criminal justice system. As a result of racism, African Americans have been victimized by the dominant population, which in this case are white people, because of their race or skin color. This demonstrates that racial discrimination, the unfair treatment of a group of people or person based on their race or skin color, currently takes place in our nation and it negatively impacts African…

Almost every day, a story will be published regarding a cop shooting a person of color due to preconceived notions and stereotypes that they are bad people. The United States was founded on the belief that all people will be “protected by the equal laws of a common government,” (Document 1). These words have not been held true since being written in 1796. In the time between then and now, there have been slaves, the civil rights movement, and the Black Lives Matter organization. In the two hundred and twenty-two years since the nation founded itself on the basis of equality, there have been many movements and even a war revolving around the human rights of people of…

For instance common representations of the Afro Caribbean community in England and the African American community in America is that as a community they keep themselves to themselves and that there is a ‘us and them’ atmosphere when it comes to people of colour and Caucasians. Although there are acceptations to these statistics when it comes to race and the characters a certain race portrays, it is a frightening image. For instance in the top 500 grossing films in the years 2007-2012, 75.8% of speaking characters were portrayed by white actors. Whereas only 12.4% of them were portrayed by black actors. In the same study…

Stereotypes of people of color and minority races have been around for many years, and have proved themselves to dominate the perception of people of color in everyday life. Films portray people of color as they are perceived by white Americans, not how they truly are, unique. Film has only dirtied the minority races’ image over time, though if the movies were not made by other Americans, they were more accurate to their race. Stereotypes of Asians have been around for a long time, ever since Asians were introduced. Stereotypes such as Asian students are smarter, Asian women are more exotic and tend to wait on men, Asian women are submissive, Asian people are all from China, and many others.…

This paper is going to explore the complex issues involving law enforcement’s often unfair treatment of African Americans and the effects it has. My intention is to explore the unfair application of laws, arrest and incarcerations rates, and sentencing disparities between races. Racial disparities have recently been thrust into the spotlight in the United States after a series of controversial instances where the African American community felt that justice was not served and that the justice system itself was biased against them. Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and Michael Brown chief among these cases.…

Hollywood: Truly a Land of Opportunity? From white actors portraying black men in classics, such as Othello, or even from white actress playing dark skinned women, such as Mariane Pearl, white actors portraying people of color in american films has been a tradition in Hollywood. Hollywood has historically made the decision to cast white actors instead of letting minorities play their own roles. While Hollywood is known for being a white industry, over the past years more noise, such as the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite (8), has been made about the lack of diversity in their films.…

Girls play with Barbie dolls and boys play with monster trucks. Asians love Korean pop music and all Mexicans know the Taco Bell dog, right? As kids grow up, they are constantly surrounded by social media, television, celebrities, and other authoritative figures such as parents and grandparents. In this day in age, it is almost impossible not to judge a person based on how they look because of how media outlets characterize certain “types” of people. Michael Omi states in his writing, “In Living Color: Race and American Culture,” that sexism and racism-fueled events suggest the American population has created one big “system of inequality which has shaped, and in turn been shaped by, our pop culture” (539).…
