Book Summary Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston is a book where the main character Janie get married at a young age out of obligation to her grandmother. This causes her to struggle with finding her identity because she can’t do anything out of her own will. Janie thinks of her life like this because there were parts of her life she liked and other parts not so much. Her first husband, Logan Killicks was an adequate husband at first taking care like a husband would. He would chop the wood, buy the food and tell her loving things. Then he stopped all this and tells her she need to her hard labor and contribute more. She knew this wasn’t a version of a marriage she wanted for herself. Next, comes along Jody who’s a man wanting a fresh start. He tells her the opportunities of the new land making it sound so enticing she ends up leaving her husband with Jody. This theory talks about women being equal in society, economics, and politics. That’s all Janie wanted in her marriage to be treated as an equal not property. In all three of her marriages Janie never has any power she is supposed to play a weak female, so her husbands can be glorified. Today nothing has changed women are still not looked at equally. Women get $0.30 less than a man does but apparently, we are in adequate to do the same job. This is showing there is a problem the women can do almost anything a man can do.
