Direct discrimination occurs when someone is treated less favourable for a reason direct to do with his or her sex, marital status that is being married, race racial origin, etc. Examples of this would be to refuse a woman job as a truck driver simply because she is a woman and refuse a Chinese person a job in a school kitchen simply because all the other employees are white European and the employer fears that a person from a different racial background will not fit in.…

For example, when I was in nursing school in Virginia, I felt like I was discriminated just because the way I look or just being different or maybe because I was Asian, but I don’t know the exact reason why nobody wanted to talk to me.…

After handling different kinds of work, including being a private nurse assistant and, currently, a human resource coordinator, I have to admit that I have had my share of expressing prejudice and discrimination. At the same time, as a woman and a member of the minority, I had been a victim of discrimination as well at work and social settings. I was born in the Dominican Republic and raised by Catholics, although I am not a practicing Catholic but a believer of a higher being. My culture influenced my identity and experiences. Culture, specifically the sexual division of labor and racist beliefs, have affected my perceptions as an employee and how I was treated in society; moreover, realizing my own biases has me to change myself and challenge…

Out of all the different occasions that I have experienced discrimination the one time that had the biggest impact on me was when my significant other got ill. I will never forget the day we walked into Tacoma General hospital. He had been experiencing some abdominal pain, when we arrived to the hospital his pain had subsided. We checked in and we could tell that it was a very busy night at the emergency room, the nurse called him back and obtained his history and vital signs which were all unremarkable at that time. We then went to the waiting area and within an hour he began to have sharp pain in his abdomen, I knew something was wrong because he would never complain even when he was in pain because he did not want us to worry, but his pain was becoming so severe that he could not hide it any longer.…
